The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) announced on Friday that the Brisbane Baylands has been selected to receive technical assistance in the form of a feasibility study on the contaminated site as part of NRELs RE-Powering America Land Initiative. The RE-Powering America Land Initiative promotes the siting of renewable energy on contaminated lands instead of greenspace as part of the larger EPA goal to clean up and revitalize contaminated sites. These studies are the first step to transforming these sites from eyesores today to community assets tomorrow. According to the EPA, the RE-Powering America Land Initiative is not just about using these sites for energy production but using these sites to re-energize communities.
