The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) announced on Friday that the Brisbane Baylands has been selected to receive technical assistance in the form of a feasibility study on the contaminated site as part of NRELs RE-Powering America Land Initiative. The RE-Powering America Land Initiative promotes the siting of renewable energy on contaminated lands instead of greenspace as part of the larger EPA goal to clean up and revitalize contaminated sites. These studies are the first step to transforming these sites from eyesores today to community assets tomorrow. According to the EPA, the RE-Powering America Land Initiative is not just about using these sites for energy production but using these sites to re-energize communities.

The Board of Supervisors gave a unanimous OK on Tuesday to a plan to put 1,600 new condominiums and apartments in a triangular area tucked between Candlestick Park and Highway 101.

Plans call for the 70-acre site, now mostly parking lots and temporary office space, to be turned into a residential community that could eventually have more than 2,800 residential units in a number of towers, some up to 240 feet tall.

Universal Paragon Corp. has unveiled a plan to build 4,500 homes and 6 million square feet of office and research and development space on the Brisbane Baylands.
The developer introduced the 30-year, 12.4 million-square-foot plan at a Brisbane City Council meeting on Monday.

The redevelopment of a capped landfill and defunct train yards would triple the population of Brisbane over the next 30 years and turn the sleepy town of 3,600 residents into a significant research and development hub. It calls for 5.1 million square feet of residential, 748,000 square feet of retail, a 706,000-square-foot hotel, 2.7 million square feet of office space, and 2.9 million square feet of research and development.

A barren specter of Visitacion Valley’s vibrant past was torn down, and pollution left behind by the former lock factory is being removed to clear a path for the site’s renaissance.

The Schlage Lock Factory provided scores of jobs that supported a lively local economy from the 1920s until it was closed in 1999.

The factory sat idle and its triangular site remained unused for nearly a decade afterward because of a legal wrangle between the lock company and a neighboring landowner.

The neighboring landowner, Universal Paragon Corp., alleged that underground pollution from the lock company’s operations had infested its property.

The parties settled the suit with Universal Paragon taking over the lock company’s land in mid-2008, kick-starting redevelopment efforts under the leadership of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency.
